I hadn't had either instrument long so it's rudimentary but shows the versatility and let's you hear that the moog driven from something other than the keyboard can sound very different.

The two front buttons that can be programmed to send out patch changes are useful, and can be reprogrammed to send cc so I used them to mute and unmute Osc 1 and 2. This gives the smoothest results though at very low volumes you can just hear a little stepping. I send the breath pressure to the filter directly by setting the ewi to output the correct cc number, (19 IIRC). The portamento toggle with the thumb rail works perfectly with glide on/off on the moog. The thumb pitch bends also work but are a little hard to handle other than for wild effects. I have the lip pressure set to pitch bend so I can use vibrato naturally, (my day job is playing sax). I've gone a more modern route with an ewi 5000 into a sub 37 via midi. Will into a vintage model D and Ross into an old Roland. Will and Ross use WX7/5's with Kenton Midi to CV boxes. I'm lucky enough to play with Will Gregory's Moog ensemble and three of us use wind controllers in that band. In this role, you want to use it to to control an AD/ADR (no sustain!) envelope's amount, and maybe rise and fall time. (Sharpening the pitch just a bit with breath pressure can be cool as well.)Īttack velocity can be good for adding attack transients. And with continuous pressure, notes are emitted legato (Note On of new note preceding Note Off of old note).īreath pressure is classically emitted as CC2, but can sometimes be remapped the WX7 for instance lets you emit it as Channel Pressure instead, or as Velocity (CC7).Ī synth that doesn't have a legato mode, doesn't handle most CCs, and only lets you use Aftertouch to affect vibrato amount, is not a good fit for wind control.īreath pressure is best thought of as a dynamic envelope generator: as a general rule, you want the sound to get louder and brighter as you blow harder. Most MIDI wind controllers can put out four signals:note, breath pressure, pitch bend, and attack velocity. To use them effectively/idiomatically, you need to understand the MIDI they output, and program the synth to make effective use of that output. I've used a wind controller with DX7/TX7, Mopho, and various soft synths.
